Judy Chu, U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 28th district since 2009, recently used her social media platform to address a range of issues including climate action, detention facility access, and concerns over law enforcement tactics.
On August 11, 2025, Chu shared her experiences at a community event focused on climate and health: “It was powerful to hear our community’s testimonies & speak out for climate action and health at the Extreme Weather People’s Hearing. While Trump rolls back key climate protections, I will continue to fight to protect our communities from the effects of extreme weather.”
The following day, she recounted efforts to inspect a downtown Los Angeles detention facility alongside fellow lawmakers: “Just a month ago, I was illegally denied entry to this DTLA Detention facility. Today, with @congressmansherman, @repjimmygomez & @repmaxinewaters, we got inside. What we saw was deeply disturbing, we weren’t allowed to speak with detainees, and we’re getting mixed reports about” (August 12, 2025).
Later that day, Chu expressed alarm regarding law enforcement practices involving unidentified agents: “Horrifying. Trump is trying to normalize masked agents abducting everyday people. And where has that led? Predators impersonating ICE to target and assault women. That’s why I led @DemWomenCaucus to demand ICE agents stop hiding their identities so we can keep women safe.” (August 12, 2025).
Chu’s public service began in the California State Assembly from 2001 through 2006 before joining Congress in 2009 after succeeding Hilda Solis. Born in Los Angeles in 1953 and currently residing in Monterey Park, she graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
