Judy Chu, U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 28th district since 2009, announced on May 26, 2026, the introduction of new legislation aimed at reforming military justice and addressing hazing in the armed forces.
In a tweet posted at 16:54 UTC, Chu stated, “Today, I have the privilege of introducing the Harry Lew and Danny Chen Military Justice Reform Act with @RepJillTokuda, @RepDanGoldman, & @SenGillibrand. My nephew, Lance Corporal Harry Lew, died by suicide after enduring horrific hazing and abuse during his military service in”. The proposed bill is named after Harry Lew and Danny Chen, both servicemembers who died following incidents of hazing.
Later that day at 20:02 UTC, Chu followed up with another statement emphasizing the broader goals of her legislative efforts, “My introduction of the Harry Lew and Danny Chen Military Justice Reform Act is only one part of a bigger fight against military hazing. We need meaningful reforms so deaths like theirs never happen again. Harry and Danny deserved better. Our servicemembers deserve better.”
Chu also marked Memorial Day by participating in commemorative events across her district. In a tweet posted at 18:57 UTC, she wrote, “This past weekend, I was honored to join celebrations across CA-28 to commemorate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. On Memorial Day, I always think about my father who served in the army during WWII. Till his last day, one of the things he was most”.
Chu has represented California’s 28th district since succeeding Hilda Solis in 2009 and previously served in the California State Assembly from 2001 to 2006. Born in Los Angeles in 1953 and currently residing in Monterey Park, she holds a BA from UCLA earned in 1974.
