California State Polytechnic University issued the following announcement on Oct. 30
The Student Services Building (SSB) has added another trophy to its impressive collection of architectural and sustainability awards.
The hub of Cal Poly Pomona’s administrative and student services won the Sustainability Award at the Los Angeles Business Council’s 50th Anniversary Architectural Awards that were presented at a virtual ceremony on Oct. 22.
“In a difficult year that has challenged many of us to rethink the enormous value of safe public spaces, the winners of this year’s Architectural Awards set a new standard for how inspired urban design can uplift life in our city,” said Mary Leslie, president of the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC).
CO Architects, which drew inspiration from the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains to create the sloping SSB roofline, designed the building and C.W. Driver was the construction contractor. Cal Poly Pomona’s Facilities Design & Construction Department oversaw all aspects in the construction of the 138,000-square-foot facility.
Before earning the prestigious LABC award, the SSB had already earned a sustainability accolade. The facility in 2019 became the first campus structure to be certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as LEED Platinum, the highest level of certification for green-building practices. The SSB scored an 83 out of a possible 110 in the certification process.
In June 2019, the SSB received top honors in the education design category at the LABC’s annual Architectural Awards.
For over 70 years, the LABC has had a major impact on public policy by harnessing the power of business and government to promote environmental and economic sustainability in the Los Angeles region.
