California State Polytechnic University, Pomona issued the following announcement on Nov. 2
Cal Poly Pomona is invested in the urgent and ongoing work of creating and sustaining an inclusive campus that celebrates diversity, in which all are welcomed and respected. To thoroughly honor the values of inclusivity and social responsibility, the university has committed to identifying systemic racism and structural inequity, and to dismantling them through pursuing tangible actions with meaningful results.
Our Commitment to Action recognizes a responsibility to remove barriers to success and outlines 12 initiatives to which the university is committed. A new webpage describes each initiative, as well as its status and progress to date. The progress is categorized in one of three stages: talking, which indicates that discussions are happening about how to address the issue; walking, which suggests that actions are underway; and running, which means that measurable progress has been made. The page is a living dashboard that will be updated periodically as the work advances.
“Creating an inclusive campus climate is the responsibility of the entire campus community,” said Nicole Butts, presidential associate for inclusive excellence and diversity. “The work of creating equity is a long-term and on-going process that involves all faculty and staff. Student voices are also critical to the understanding of how inequities manifest for them and impact their lives,” she said. She believes the webpage is an important tool because it allows for transparency and is a place where people can see what’s happening and get involved.
Faculty and staff in particular are encouraged to review the initiatives with their colleagues, and to think about and discuss with their leadership what pieces could make sense for them to undertake as a group, department or division. Faculty, staff and students are also welcome to join the general membership of the Inclusive Excellence Council. The council serves as an advisory body to the university, focused on fostering the campus value of inclusivity. Key aspects to this value that the council examines include access, equity, climate and belonging, as well as shared responsibility and accountability.
